The Center for Palliative Studies (CPS) embodies San Diego Hospice & Palliative
Care's commitment to education and research. Established in 1989, CPS has grown to
be the largest and most influential hospice and palliative care education and research
facility of its kind.

Education
Nursing students, medical students, residents, fellows, bereavement interns, dietary interns, pharmacy students, and social work students are among those healthcare professionals who can benefit from the numerous education opportunities offered by CPS.

Research
In order to discover new knowledge, CPS fosters research in areas fundamental to hospice and palliative care, including bereavement, cultural diversity, and pain and symptom management.

Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program
CPS offers one of the largest and most rigorous accredited palliative medicine fellowships in the world. Fellows receive broad, practical experience in hospice and palliative medicine that includes rotations at our Inpatient Care Center, Home Hospice Program, and Hospital Consultation Services.

At the end of their year with us, some fellows join our faculty, some stay for a second
full fellowship year, and others move to different parts of the country to manage their
own hospice or hospital-based palliative care service programs. Between direct care-
giving and teaching others about palliative care, our fellows have an exponential impact
on the future of end-of-life care in our local community and beyond.

Joint Conferences on Pain Management and Palliative Care
The Center for Palliative Studies at San Diego Hospice & Palliative Care, San Diego County Medical Society, and UCSD Center for Pain and Palliative Medicine will host three final Joint Conferences on Pain Management and Palliative Care in 2006. These conferences provide physicians with opportunities to enhance their skills while meeting the California Assembly Bill 487 mandate. This bill requires that all California physicians receive a minimum of 12 hours of continuing medical education in pain management and palliative care by the time they renew their medical licenses in 2006.

Over 150 physicians and healthcare professionals have participated in the Joint Conference series to date, gaining new knowledge about pain management and end-of-life issues to benefit the patients and families they serve.

The final three conferences are scheduled for September 23-24, October 21-22, and
December 8-10.

International Reach
As an internationally-recognized leader in the field of palliative care, San Diego Hospice
& Palliative Care (SDHPC) has been invited to educate healthcare professionals all over
the world, from China and Africa to the former Soviet countries of Moldova and Georgia,
in an effort to bring better care to patients and their families. Recently, the Center for
Palliative Studies at SDHPC sent a team of experts to the Middle East, where they
worked in conjunction with Capital Hospice of Fairfax, VA to educate over 70 healthcare
staff, including doctors, nurses, and pharmacists treating patients in twelve hospitals.

64 patients benefited from the new skills these healthcare professionals learned in the
first month after our team returned home.
