Professional Education through the Center for Grief Care and Education The Center for Grief Care and Education (CGCE) has applied 28 years of San Diego Hospice & Palliative Care’s experience and research towards developing quality workshops and programs for professionals who are supporting the bereaved in our community. Anyone who works or volunteers in an area where loss is a major theme can benefit from this training. This includes, but is not limited to, therapists; social workers; counselors; pastoral staff; funeral directors; those who visit with the sick and dying; and those who work with the foster care system, child abuse, domestic violence, crime victims or divorce. |

Grief, Loss and Bereavement Certificate Program The Center for Grief Care and Education is pleased to offer our Grief and Bereavement Certificate Program. Emphasizing the natural and normal processes that occur after a loss, and viewing the death and dying process as a natural element of the life cycle, this educational program will focus on the physical, emotional, ethical and spiritual needs of those grieving a loss. Approaches for meeting these needs are based on theory, research, and professional experience. |

The goal of this certificate program is to educate and train community professionals and paraprofessionals to work with those who are grieving some type of loss. The program builds on a foundation of knowledge that culminates with two certificate levels. However, most classes may be taken independently, without obligation to complete the certificate program criteria. For more information, please download the program details and course descriptions. At the Center for Grief Care and Education at San Diego Hospice & Palliative Care, we provide assessments, bereavement counseling, and outreach support to families, individuals, couples, and groups of all ages. Counseling and outreach services are provided in our offices in Hillcrest and also in the clients’ homes. Our one-year intern program provides over 60 hours of initial training, three hours of weekly clinical supervision from licensed (AAMFT Approved) therapist(s), a mentor program, continuing education, and a variety of other opportunities. Opportunities include working in our Inpatient Care Center, training with an Art Therapist, partnering with our Children’s Program social worker, and facilitating debriefs for clinical staff. Monthly department in-services (including creative arts training) supplement frequent trainings offered by members of our interdisciplinary team. The counseling intern positions are volunteer. We do provide reimbursement for mileage to home sessions and off-site support groups. We ask for a 12-month commitment from our counselors, and counselors must commit to 25 hours per week. We expect our counselors to actively participate in individual and group supervision every week, and counselors also schedule meetings with Preceptors throughout their internship. We have the ability to provide live supervision as well as videotaping and audiotaping. Training cycles begin in January, May and August. For more information, please download our intern flyer and call Nicole Reich at: To apply, please submit an intern application via email to nreich@sdhospice.org or by fax to 619-278-6320. Additionally, we provide a variety of time-limited support groups that are specific to the type of loss and require an assessment session before the group begins. This is an excellent opportunity for grieving families to come to a support group together and receive specialized counseling that is age-relevant. We have partnered with the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office to offer several free services to those who have experienced a sudden death.
